Tiling calculator
Enter the area and the tile size, choose the layout, and get tile count with the right waste for the pattern, plus adhesive and grout bags for the joint width. Herringbone and diagonal layouts automatically carry more waste.

How it works out the quantities
- 1Tiles per m² = 1 ÷ (tile length × tile width in metres). A 600 × 300 mm tile gives 5.56 per m².
- 2Waste: 10% for straight lay, 10–15% for brick bond, 15–20% for diagonal and herringbone because of the cuts at every edge.
- 3Adhesive: about 3–4 kg/m² with a 6 mm bed for walls, 5–7 kg/m² for floors and large format — converted to 20 kg bags.
- 4Grout: joint width × tile depth × joint length per m² × density, so wider joints and smaller tiles use noticeably more.
Site tips before you order
- Order everything from one batch; shade variation between batches is the commonest callback.
- Large-format and porcelain tiles need a levelling system and often a flexible adhesive — add them to the materials.
- Wet rooms need tanking and falls before tiling; price it separately.
- Keep a box of spares for the client — and put it on the quote.
Common questions
How many tiles do I need for 10 m² with 600 × 300 tiles?
5.56 tiles per m² × 10 = 56 tiles, plus 10% waste for a straight lay = about 62 tiles. Herringbone would need about 67.
How much waste for herringbone?
Allow 15–20%. Every row is cut at both ends and the pattern rarely lands on a whole tile.
How much adhesive per m²?
Roughly 3–4 kg for walls with a 6 mm notched trowel and 5–7 kg for floors or large format with a 10 mm trowel. A 20 kg bag covers about 4–6 m² on walls.
How much grout do I need?
It depends on joint width and tile size — a 300 × 300 tile with 3 mm joints uses about 0.4 kg/m²; a mosaic several times that. The calculator does the arithmetic.
