Buildertrend alternative for UK builders: EstiMate vs Buildertrend

If you're a UK builder looking at Buildertrend, here's the short answer. Buildertrend is a mature, all-in-one system that Buildertrend says, in a reply quoted on Capterra, is built for custom home builders and remodellers. If you run a sizeable residential firm with office staff and you're happy with a quote-based deal paid annually or quarterly, there's a lot in it.

If you're a small or mid-sized UK firm that wants to see the price before the sales call, pay monthly, and keep CIS, reverse-charge VAT and your accounts in the same place as your quotes, EstiMate is the better fit.

Buildertrend is American, and Software Advice UK lists it as available in the UK. That's not a criticism. It just shows up in the detail: payment fees quoted in dollars, including ACH bank transfers, accounting through QuickBooks, and no CIS or reverse-charge feature that we could find. EstiMate was built in the UK, by a builder, for UK construction.

Prices checked October 2026, as listed on Buildertrend's pricing page, Buildertrend's pricing comparison and EstiMate pricing. "Not found" means we searched Buildertrend's published material in October 2026 and didn't find it. If it matters to you, ask Buildertrend.

Difference one: you can see our price

Buildertrend doesn't publish prices. Its pricing page says pricing "is tailored to meet the unique needs of your business", and its FAQ says a quote depends on your builder type, annual revenue and business needs. Its own comparison table describes the model as "Custom quote; all-in-one", paid annually or quarterly. To be fair to them, Buildertrend says every plan includes unlimited users, which matters if you've got a big office.

You'll find third-party websites guessing at Buildertrend's prices. We're not repeating them, because they aren't Buildertrend's figures. If you want a number, you'll need a demo and a sales conversation.

EstiMate's prices are on the page, per business, per month:

  • Free: £0, no time limit, no card. 3 jobs a month, watermarked PDFs.
  • EstiMate: £15.99 a month. Unlimited jobs, contracts with e-signatures, variations, invoicing and the Accounts tab.
  • EstiMate Pro: £39.99 a month. Adds the AI quote writer, AI take-off from drawings, retention, valuations and subcontracts, cost control and snagging pinned on drawings.

There's no contract on any of them. A year of Pro is £39.99 × 12 = £479.88, and you can stop in any month you like. That's the price you pay, and EstiMate issues a VAT receipt for every payment.

Be clear on users, though. Free, EstiMate and Pro are one business login. On Pro, your site team can log time, expenses, photos and diary entries through the Site Crew app from a job link or QR code, with no per-worker charge. If several people in the office need their own logins with roles, that's EstiMate Corp, from £249 a month, and Buildertrend's unlimited users count in its favour there.

Difference two: UK tax is built in, not worked around

This is where a US product and a UK builder part company. In one week you might be a contractor deducting CIS from your subbies, a subcontractor having CIS taken off you, and invoicing a main contractor under the domestic reverse charge.

We searched Buildertrend's product material for CIS deductions and the VAT domestic reverse charge in October 2026 and found neither. Its accounting runs through QuickBooks. Its invoice help article quotes a card fee of 2.99% and a flat $15 for ACH (a US bank-transfer system), with payouts in 3 to 5 business days. We couldn't confirm how online payments work for UK customers, so that's another one to ask about.

EstiMate handles VAT at 20%, 5% and 0%, and reverse-charge invoices carry the required wording. The Accounts tab keeps a CIS register, gives you a P&L for any period and works out the figures for your VAT return. It doesn't file to HMRC: you or your accountant still submit the return, and plenty of firms keep an accountant for year-end anyway. Card payments go through Stripe into your own Stripe account. If CIS still gives you a headache, our CIS guide for contractors and subcontractors walks through it.

Difference three: one app for the money, not a sync to babysit

Buildertrend does job costing natively and pushes the accounting to QuickBooks. That's a reasonable design, and it's also one of the things its reviewers grumble about. In Capterra's accounting category, about 47% of 175 reviews are negative, mainly about QuickBooks sync errors. In the performance category, about 57% of 271 reviews are negative, citing slow loading, glitches and downtime (Buildertrend reviews on Capterra). G2 reviewers mention cost, complexity and a steep learning curve (G2).

EstiMate doesn't do a live sync with Xero or QuickBooks either, and we won't pretend it does. What it does is keep the job and the money in one place. The accepted quote becomes the contract. A signed variation updates the contract total, the invoices and the reports, with an audit trail. Invoices are tracked as invoiced, paid or owed. The P&L, VAT figures and CIS register come from those same records. When your accountant wants the numbers, you send year-end exports, plus cost exports in Xero or QuickBooks formats.

What Buildertrend does well

Credit where it's due. Buildertrend is a deep product:

  • Daily logs with photos and video, automatic weather, and a choice of who can see each log (daily logs).
  • Change orders with e-signature approvals from staff or clients, with your internal cost hidden from the client (change orders).
  • Selections and allowances, where clients approve options in the client portal.
  • On-screen takeoff from uploaded plans.
  • A big review base: 4.5 from about 2,485 reviews on Capterra in a May 2026 snapshot.

Who it suits: a larger residential builder or remodeller with an office team, who wants a client portal for selections, already runs QuickBooks, and is comfortable signing an annual or quarterly deal on a custom quote. If that's you, book the demo.

Where EstiMate fits better

EstiMate suits UK builders and contractors who quote, contract, run and account for projects without an office department to run the software. Extensions, loft conversions, kitchen and bathroom refits, office fit-outs, and firms that use CIS subbies and take stage payments with retention.

Things you get that we couldn't find at Buildertrend:

  • A free plan with no time limit, so you can price three real jobs a month before paying a penny.
  • AI take-off on Pro that reads architect PDFs and shows which sheet each quantity came from. Buildertrend's takeoff is on-screen measuring, and we found no AI auto-takeoff.
  • JCT-style valuations on Pro. We found nothing JCT-related in Buildertrend's material.
  • TenderPilot: UK public-sector tenders, and council planning registers as local leads. Searching tenders is free on any plan.

What to do next

  1. Write down what you need: CIS, reverse charge, stage payments, retention, and how many people will use it.
  2. If you talk to Buildertrend, ask directly about CIS, the domestic reverse charge, UK card payments and the contract term, and get the answers in writing.
  3. Open a free EstiMate account and price a live job on it. Upgrade when the free limit gets in your way, or don't.
