ServiceM8 alternative for UK builders: EstiMate vs ServiceM8
ServiceM8 is a very good app for service businesses. It charges by the number of jobs you run, not the number of people, it has a free plan that doesn't expire, and its AI drafts quotes from your past work. If you're an electrician, plumber or handyman doing lots of short jobs, it deserves a place on your shortlist.
Builders are a different case. You don't run 150 jobs a month. You run four or five, each lasting weeks, with a contract, stage payments, variations, CIS subbies and a VAT position to get right. That's the paperwork EstiMate is built around.
So: lots of short jobs and a team on iPhones, try ServiceM8. A handful of long projects that need contracting, running and accounting for, read on.
ServiceM8 is good at what it's built for
Credit where it's due. ServiceM8 is Australian, founded in 2009 (ServiceM8 about us) and based in Darwin (ServiceM8 careers). It covers quoting, scheduling and dispatch, a job diary, invoicing and forms, with a dispatch map and staff schedule (ServiceM8 features).
Its AI is real. Auto-Quote drafts the work description and a materials and labour list from the job card and your past invoices, though it needs at least 100 completed jobs to give reasonable results (Auto-Quote). Office Agent drafts quotes, invoices and messages for your approval, and the September 2026 update added connections to ChatGPT and Claude (September 2026 update). Clients can sign when they accept a quote (quote signatures), and the Proposals add-on lets them pick optional sections (Proposals). It scores 4.5 out of 5 from 311 reviews on Capterra.
The price is closer than you'd think
| Plan | ServiceM8 (ex VAT) | EstiMate (per business) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | £0, 30 jobs, 1 user | £0, 3 jobs a month |
| Entry | £25, 50 jobs | £15.99, unlimited jobs |
| Next up | £59, 150 jobs | Pro £39.99 |
| Bigger | £119 or £269 | Commercial from £99, Corp from £249 |
Prices checked October 2026, per month: ServiceM8 UK pricing and EstiMate pricing. ServiceM8's paid plans include unlimited users, extra jobs are 15p each, and the page says prices don't include VAT. EstiMate's prices are the amount you actually pay, and you get a VAT receipt each time.
No point pretending otherwise: ServiceM8's free plan is more generous than ours on job count, 30 a month against 3, and its £25 plan is cheap for a team of any size. ServiceM8 doesn't charge per user, so the usual per-seat argument doesn't apply here. In fact its paid plans include unlimited users, while EstiMate's £15.99 and £39.99 plans are one office login (on Pro the site team use Site Crew links, and separate office seats with roles are on Corp, from £249).
The difference is what's in the box. ServiceM8 relies on Xero, QuickBooks Online or MYOB for the accounts, and we couldn't find prices for add-ons such as Proposals and Forms. EstiMate's £15.99 plan already includes contracts with e-signatures, variations, the CIS register, RAMS and COSHH, and the Accounts tab.
ServiceM8 counts jobs. A builder counts stages.
The contract and the variations
EstiMate turns the accepted quote into a contract with payment terms, delays, insurance, guarantee and dispute wording, which the client signs online. When the client wants an extra Velux on week six, you price it from site, they approve it from a link, and it becomes a signed addendum that updates the contract total and invoices.
ServiceM8 takes a signature on the quote, but we couldn't find a contract builder or a variations feature (October 2026). On a £400 repair that's no loss. On a £70,000 extension it's the bit that protects you. Our guide to pricing variations and getting paid explains why.
CIS and the reverse charge
EstiMate records CIS deductions in a CIS register, and reverse-charge invoices carry the required wording. We couldn't find CIS deductions in ServiceM8. For the reverse charge, its help centre says you sync the tax rates from Xero or QuickBooks or create them by hand, and add the wording yourself through a separate invoice template (ServiceM8 DRC). It works, but the set-up and the wording are on you.
The accounts
EstiMate's Accounts tab shows P&L for any period, VAT return figures, aged debtors and year-end exports for your accountant. It prepares the figures and doesn't file to HMRC. ServiceM8 syncs with Xero, QuickBooks Online and MYOB (ServiceM8 integrations), and can't create credit notes, which are done in the accounts package instead (credit notes). If you want a live sync to Xero, ServiceM8 has one and EstiMate doesn't: we export files in Xero and QuickBooks formats.
Room Scan measures the room. Take-off reads the drawing.
ServiceM8's Room Scan is clever: on a LiDAR iPhone or iPad it captures a 3D model of a room with floor area, wall lengths and wall areas (Room Scan). Great for a refurb you can stand in. For a new extension there's no room yet, just the architect's PDFs. EstiMate Pro's AI take-off reads those drawings and shows which sheet each quantity came from, then feeds the quote. Other tools do AI take-off too; ours goes straight into the quote, contract and invoices.
Site records, snagging and safety
ServiceM8's job diary logs notes, photos and status changes per job, which isn't a daily site diary. Its Forms add-on covers risk assessments using Australian terms such as JSA and SWMS, and we couldn't find UK RAMS or COSHH templates (ServiceM8 Forms). EstiMate keeps a site diary with weather and workforce, has RAMS and COSHH on the £15.99 plan, and puts snagging with numbered pins on drawings on Pro, where clients can report snags too.

"Not found" means we searched ServiceM8's site and help centre in October 2026 and found nothing. It isn't proof the feature is missing.
A word on phones
ServiceM8 started on iPhone and iPad. Its pages are mixed on Android: one says the Android app has almost all the same features, another calls it "ServiceM8 Lite" and recommends iPhones or iPads for full management (ServiceM8 Android). EstiMate has an iPhone app and runs in the browser on Android, with no native Android app. If your crew are on Android, test both on their phones.

What to do next
- Write down how many jobs you ran last month and how long each one lasted.
- If it's lots of short jobs, start ServiceM8's free plan. If it's a few long projects, start EstiMate's.
- Put the same real job through both and compare what you've got at the end: quote, contract, variations, invoices and the VAT figures. On EstiMate, the contract, variations, invoicing and accounts come with the £15.99 plan.
